INTERVIEW STRATEGIES - Preparing for a strategic conversation;
engaging in a focused debate....
Sanjay Kapoor,Director & CEO : Iris-Corp
Preparation for an interview begins with a well-designed CV. Unless you are called
for an interview, how can you devise an interview strategy? Recruiters call
candidates for an interview only if they are impressed by what they see on their
table. No matter how well groomed you are for the job you have applied for, if
your CV does not say it forcefully, you will not receive an interview call. Prepare
yourself for an interview by getting a professionally designed CV which speaks
on your behalf before you make an appearance in front of the interviewing panel.
Typically, your CV gets just 7-10 seconds for being considered worthy of procuring
an interview call for you. Tuning up your CV should be your paramount concern
if you want to get an interview call.
Your job at the interview is to sell yourself ahead of others who have come for
the same purpose. Different companies demand different attributes. Therefore,
it would be a good thing to conduct some research about your prospective
employer. More importantly, you have to convince the interviewer of your being
the most suitable candidate for that particular job. Your accomplishments
(enumerated in your CV) should match the expectations of the company and
your avowals at the interface should be unequivocal. Your success lies solely
in your ability to convince the interviewer that you are tailor-made for the job.
Since you will not get a second chance, do not hesitate to speak your heart
out, but do not sound boastful. A practical approach is always preferable. Be
prepared to answer the questions that are most likely to be asked at almost
every interview:
· What are your goals in life
· Why do you think you are suitable for this job
· How can you make a difference if you are hired
· What are your greatest strengths / weaknesses
· Tell us what you have achieved in your earlier jobs
During the interview, be relaxed, look interested and wait for the interviewer
to finish his/her question. Assess your interviewer’s mood, tone and inclination
to listen to reasoning. Be concise but do not miss out on giving important
information. The most important things in any interview are confidence and
positivity. Of course, knowledge about the role is a pre-requisite. Never be found
wanting in any of these.
